Gary Illyes Webmaster Trends Analyst communicator of the “algorithm” team at Google has just announced that the search engine is in the process of “switching” the focus of indexing to favor referencing on phones and tablets.
This is important news, because Google has always favored the desktop version of sites for search results, even those rendered on mobiles.
It seems that this time two indexes will coexist and the priority will be that of mobiles.
While not a complete surprise, this trend puts smartphones and tablets at the center of SEO specialists’ concerns.
The share of queries launched on mobile devices is so rapid that this movement was almost inevitable.
Site owners, make sure your sites are mobile-friendly, responsive, consider an AMP version , and make sure the content meets best practices for these devices.
Not yet in force
Now, please remember that this is just an announcement, a warning. There is no doubt that Google wants to raise awareness and encourage website owners to make efforts towards their mobile versions, in particular responsive design , but in the near future with AMP.
